CFA2S - CfA Redshift Survey: South Galactic Cap Data

Overview

The Center for Astrophysics (CfA) Redshift Survey South Galactic Cap (CFA2S) Catalog contains redshifts for a sample of about 4300 galaxies with blue (Zwicky B(0) type) magnitude <= 15.5 covering the range from 20 h to 4h in right ascension and from -2.5 deg to 90 deg in declination. This sample is complete for all galaxies in the merge of the Zwicky et al. and Nilson catalogs in the south Galactic cap. Redshifts for 2964 of these were measured as part of the second CfA Redshift Survey. The data reveal large voids in the foreground and background of the Perseus-Pisces Supercluster. The largest of these voids lies at a mean velocity ~ 8000km/s, has diameter of ~ 5000km/s, and is enclosed by a complex of dense structures. The large structure known as the Perseus-Pisces Supercluster forms the near side of this complex. On the far side of this large void, at a mean velocity of ~ 12000km/s, there is another coherent dense wall. The structures in this survey support the view that galaxies generally lie on surfaces surrounding or nearly surrounding low-density regions or voids.

Provenance

This table was created by the HEASARC in March 2005 based on CDS table J/ApJS/121/287/cfa2s.dat.gz

Parameters

Name
The name of the galaxy. Following the RC1 and RC2, galaxies that appear in the NGC and IC catalogs are listed using their NGC or IC designations. Non-NGC or -IC galaxies that are listed in the Zwicky catalog or the UGC have been given an IAU style coordinate name of the form HHMMm+DDMM where HHMMm is the RA in hours, minutes and tenths of minutes, and +DDMM (or -DDMM) is the declination in degrees and arcminutes. These coordinate names are derived from the original Zwicky catalog position, even if a more accurate position has been measured. Bright anonymous galaxies which are not in Zwicky or the UGC are designated as AHHMM+DDMM, i.e., with a leading "A" and no fractional minutes. The HEASARC has added the Dictionary of Nomenclature of Celestial Objects recommended prefix for objects in this catalog of "[HVG99b]".

RA
The Right Ascension of the galaxy in the selected equinox. This was given in B1950 coordinates and to a precision of 0.1 seconds of time in the original table. These coordinates are primarily from the Zwicky catalog. For brighter galaxies, for Markarian galaxies, for some objects with improved coordinates in the PGC and RC3, and for many objects from the DSS whose positions have been measured, improved coodinates are listed.

Dec
The Declination of the galaxy in the selected equinox. This was given in B1950 coordinates and to a precision of 1 arcsecond in the original table. These coordinates are primarily from the Zwicky catalog. For brighter galaxies, for Markarian galaxies, for some objects with improved coordinates in the PGC and RC3, and for many objects from the DSS whose positions have been measured, improved coodinates are listed.

LII
The Galactic Longitude of the galaxy.

BII
The Galactic Latitude of the galaxy.

Bmag
The apparent blue magnitude in the Zwicky-B(0) system (Huchra 1976, AJ, 81, 952). These magnitudes are from the RC1 or the merged Zwicky-Nilson catalog, unless otherwise noted by the presence of a non-blank code in the ref_bmag parameter.

Ref_Bmag
This parameter contains a code for a magnitude reference if the magnitude is not from either the RC1 or the merged Zwicky-Nilson catalog, where "B" means that the quoted value is a B_T magnitude which has been converted to the B(0)-Zwicky system, "H" that it is a split Zwicky magnitude (for multiple galaxies), "M" that it is from Markarian and Lipovetskii (1974) and "S" that it is from Sakai, Giovanelli and Wegner (1994).

Radial_Velocity
The heliocentric radial velocity of the galaxy, in km/s.

Radial_Velocity_Error
The RMS uncertainty in the heliocentric radial velocity, in km/s.

Ref_Radial_Velocity
A code for the reference for the radial velocity. The key to the codes is given in Table 2 of the published paper and is also available at https://cdsarc.cds.unistra.fr/ftp/cats/J/ApJS/121/287/refs.dat.gz

Morph_Type
The numerically coded, revised Hubble (morphological) Type of the galaxy. Numerically coded Hubble types were introduced in the RC2 and the correspondence of these codes to the Hubble types are as follows:

      Code: Definition

        -7: Unclassified elliptical
        -6: Compact elliptical
        -5: E, dwarf elliptical

Bar_Type
The numerically coded, revised Hubble (bar) Type of the galaxy. Numerically coded Hubble types were introduced in the RC2 and the correspondence of these codes to the Hubble types are as follows:
