Overview

This table contains the final band-merged European Large-Area ISO Survey (ELAIS) Catalog at 6.7, 15, 90 and 175 microns (µm), and the associated data at U, g', r', i', Z, J, H, K and 20 cm. The origin of the survey, infrared and radio observations, data-reduction and optical identifications are briefly reviewed in the reference paper, and a summary of the area covered and the completeness limit for each infrared band is given. A detailed discussion of the band-merging and optical association strategy is given in the paper. The total catalog consists of 3762 sources. 23% of the 15-um sources and 75% of the 6.7-um sources are stars. In the paper, for extragalactic sources observed in three or more infrared bands, color-color diagrams are presented and discussed in terms of the contributing infrared populations.

Spectroscopic redshifts are tabulated, where available. For the N1 and N2 areas, the Isaac Newton Telescope (INT) ugriz Wide Field Survey permits photometric redshifts to be estimated for galaxies and quasars. These agree well with the spectroscopic redshifts, within the uncertainty of the photometric method (~10% in (1 +z) for galaxies).

There is a high proportion of ultraluminous infrared galaxies (ULIRGs, with log10 of 1-1000 um luminosity Lir > 12.22) in the ELAIS Catalog (14% of 15-um galaxies with known z), many with Arp 220-like SEDs. 10% of the 15-um sources are genuine optically blank fields to r'= 24: these must have very high infrared-to-optical ratios and probably have z > 0.6, so are high-luminosity dusty starbursts or Type 2 AGN. Nine hyperluminous infrared galaxies (Lir > 13.22) and nine extremely red objects (EROs) (r-K > 6) are found in the survey. The latter are interpreted as ultraluminous dusty infrared galaxies at z ~ 1. The large numbers of ultraluminous galaxies imply very strong evolution in the star formation rate between z = 0 and 1. There is also a surprisingly large population of luminous (Lir > 11.5), cool (cirrus-type SEDs) galaxies, with Lir - Lopt > 0, implying AV > 1.

This table contains the total catalog of 3762 ELIAS band-merged sources.

Provenance

This table was created by the HEASARC in October 2012 based on CDS Catalog J/MNRAS/351/1290 files catalog.dat (3523 sources) and unassoc.dat (239 sources). It was last updated in November 2012 to correct the 6.7-micron flux density values for 14 entries using data provided directly from the primary author.

Parameters

Name
The ELAIS source designation of the merged source, named in order of preference for their detections at 15 um, 20 cm, 6.7 um, 90 um and 175 um, using the corresponding prefixes, their J2000.0 equatorial positions, and (in some cases) a suffix 'X' for composite sources, e.g., 'ELAISNNN JHHMMSS+DDMMSSX'. The string 'NNN' can have the following values:

The character 'X' can have values of 'T' (for total source), or 'C' (for component C of a composite source). There are 4 sources detected only at 175 um which have a different naming convention, e.g., 'ELAIS-FIRBACK175 N2 014', ELAIS-FIRBACK175 N1 028', 'ELAIS-FIRBACK175 N1 022' and 'ELAIS-FIRBACK175 N1 027', where FIRBACK175 stands for 'Far-Infrared Background, 175 um', N1 and N2 are two of the ELAIS fields the properties of which are given in Table 1 of the reference paper, and the last digits are a source number.

Note that in the reference paper the prefix 'ELAISR20' was used rather than 'ELAISR'. The HEASARC has adopted the latter naming convention in compliance with the CDS Dictionary of Nomenclature of Celestial Objects recommendation.

RA
The Right Ascension of the ELAIS source in the selected equinox based on in order of preference their detections at 15 um, 20 cm, 6.7 um, 90 um and 175 um. This coordinate was given in J2000.0 coordinates to a precision of 0.0001 seconds of time in the original table. The 1-sigma positional uncertainties at 15-um and 20-cm have been estimated to be ~ 1 arcsecond. The uncertainties at 6.7 um are larger, being based on a single raster with a pixel size of 3 arcseconds. The uncertainties of the 90 and 175 um positions are an order of magnitude larger again, with matching radii of 30 and 60 arcseconds, respectively.

Dec
The Declination of the ELAIS source in the selected equinox based on in order of preference their detections at 15 um, 20 cm, 6.7 um, 90 um and 175 um. This coordinate was given in J2000.0 coordinates to a precision of 0.0001 arcseconds in the original table. Optical_Assoc_Flag
A flag parameter indicating the details about the optical source association, coded as follows (where WFS refers to the INT ugriz Wide Field Survey):

         1: if source falls in gaps between WFS chips, so no optical data,
         2: if source falls near edge of WFS chip, so photometry may be
            unreliable
         3: if source has multiple optical counterparts
         4: if source is blank in optical (i.e. no optical counterpart with
            probability of association >0.7 within specified search radius)
         6: if there is an association in NED
         7: if association is bright star

Jmag
The J-magnitude of the ELAIS source taken from the source coded in the ref_jmag parameter.

Optical_Assoc_Prob
The probability of the optical association with the ELAIS source, using a threshold value of 0.7 (sources with no optical counterpart have been assigned values of 0.00). This parameter is defined in equation (5) of Gonzalez-Solares (2005, MNRAS, 358, 333) as the probability L that an optical object of magnitude m is the true counterpart of a source with an error ellipse defined by its major (sigma1) and minor (sigma2) axes, and separated by a distance r, given by L = [Q(m)exp(-r2/2)]/[2 pi sigma1 sigma_2_N(m)] where Q and N are the magnitude distributions of the sources and objects, respectively.

Optical_Assoc_Relbty
The reliability of the optical association with the ELAIS source (sources with no optical counterpart have been assigned values of 0.00). This parameter is defined in equation (6) of Gonzalez-Solares (2005, MNRAS, 358, 333) as Rj = Lj/[Sumi (Li) + (1-Q)]. The reliability provides information about the number of candidates with high likelihood values. A candidate will have large values of likelihood and reliability if it is the only probable counterpart of a source. In a case where there are multiple probable counterparts (in the sense of high likelihood), they all will have low reliability values.

Phot_SED_Type_No_Abs
The photometric spectral energy distribution (SED) type of the ELAIS source, assuming no dust extinction (AV = 0). These types are defined as follows:

         1: E galaxy
         2: Sab galaxy
         3: Sbc galaxy
         4: Scd galaxy
         5: Sdm galaxy
         6: starburst galaxy
