PPMXLBMD - PPM-XL Bright M Dwarfs Catalog |
HEASARC Archive |
The PPMXL catalog (Roeser et al. 2010) represents a combination of the USNO-B1.0 and Two Micron All-Sky Survey (2MASS) catalogs mapped on to the International Celestial Reference Frame (ICRF), which allows proper motions to be described in a quasi-absolute manner as opposed to relative. PPMXL now provides low uncertainties for both the proper motion and position for many of the objects within the two catalogs. Typical uncertainties for proper motions are 4 - 10 mas/yr. The NIR JHK magnitudes from 2MASS and the optical BVRI magnitudes from USNO-B1.0 also provide very useful color information about the objects and are used during the sample selection process.
In this work, the authors classified 4,054 M dwarfs with magnitudes of K < 9 from the PPMXL catalog. By probing down to lower proper motions, this work has produced 1,193 new bright M dwarf candidates that were not included in previous catalogs. By combining these objects with M dwarfs from Lepine & Gaidos (2011, AJ, 142, 138) the authors obtained a final catalog with 8,479 K < 9 late K and M dwarfs suitable for future exoplanet transit studies.

Source_Number
A unique sequential identification number for each source in
the catalog in order of increasing J2000.0 Right Ascension.
Name
The source designation for the M dwarf created by the HEASARC in the
style recommended by the CDS Dictionary of Nomenclature of Celestial Objects,
e.g. '[FPJ2013] nnnn', where the prefix stands for Frith, Pinfield, Jones 2013
and 'nnnn' is the source number value.
RA
The Right Ascension of the M dwarf in the selected equinox.
Notice that the equinox (and epoch) of the RA in the PPMXL catalog were J2000,
and that the HEASARC RA parameter is precessed, if necessary, from the J2000
value, with no allowance being made for proper motion.
Dec
The Declination of the M dwarf in the selected equinox.
Notice that the equinox (and epoch) of the Declination in the PPMXL catalog
were J2000, and that the HEASARC RA parameter is precessed, if necessary, from
the J2000 value, with no allowance being made for proper motion.
LII
The Galactic Longitude of the M dwarf.
BII
The Galactic Latitude of the M dwarf.
PM_RA
The proper motion of the M dwarf along the Right Ascension direction,
in mas/year.
PM_RA_Error
The uncertainty in the proper motion of the M dwarf along the
Right Ascension direction, in mas/year.
PM_Dec
The proper motion of the M dwarf along the Declination direction,
in mas/year.
PM_Dec_Error
The uncertainty in the proper motion of the M dwarf along the
Declination direction, in mas/year.
Jmag
The 2MASS J magnitude of the M dwarf.
Hmag
The 2MASS H magnitude of the M dwarf.
Ks_Mag
The 2MASS Ks magnitude of the M dwarf.
B1_Mag
The USNO-B1 B magnitude of the M dwarf from the first epoch. These magnitudes
should be used with care, as the photometric calibration may be severely off
for some plates.
B2_Mag
The USNO-B1 B magnitude of the M dwarf from the second epoch. These
magnitudes should be used with care, as the photometric calibration may be
severely off for some plates.
R1_Mag
The USNO-B1 R magnitude of the M dwarf from the first epoch. These magnitudes
should be used with care, as the photometric calibration may be severely off
for some plates.
R2_Mag
The USNO-B1 R magnitude of the M dwarf from the second epoch. These
magnitudes should be used with care, as the photometric calibration may be
severely off for some plates.
Imag
The USNO-B1 I magnitude of the M dwarf. These magnitudes should be used with
care, as the photometric calibration may be severely off for some plates. The
USNO-B1 I magnitude of the M dwarf.
PPMXL_Flag
This parameter contains the PPMXL flag value, with values and meanings as
follows:
1 = one of the coordinates had an excessively large chi2 2 = row from PPMX (CDS Cat. I/312) [if set, magnitudes b1, b2, r1, r2, i have a special meaning] 10 = row from PPMX (CDS Cat. I/312) [if set, magnitudes b1, b2, r1, r2, i have a special meaning] and replaces multiple USNO-B1.0 objects
PM_Tot
The total proper motion of the M dwarf, in mas/year.
JK_Color
The 2MASS J-K color index of the M dwarf.
Ref_PM
The reference codes and meanings for the origin of the proper motion
information:
1 = PPMXL (CDS Cat. I/317) 2 = SUPERBLINK 3 = Tycho-2 (CDS Cat. I/259)
