XMMAO - XMM-Newton Accepted Targets |
HEASARC Archive |
For complete and authoritative information on the XMM-Newton mission, policies, and data archive, refer to the web pages of the European Space Agency's (ESA's) XMM-Newton Science Operations Center at http://xmm.esac.esa.int/ and of NASA's XMM-Newton Guest Observer Facility at http://heasarc.gsfc.nasa.gov/docs/xmm/xmmgof.html
Notice that all priority C targets from AOs 1 through 19 which were never observed by XMM-Newton (and hence have expired) have been removed from this table. To check which targets have either already been observed by XMM-Newton or are on the short-term schedule to be observed in the next few weeks, users should examine the XMMMASTER table which is also contained in Browse. To find out which targets are currently scheduled to be observed in the next three months, the user should check the XMM-Newton Advanced Plan at http://xmm.esac.esa.int/external/xmm_sched/advance_plan.shtml
While abstracts are available for most proposals, there are a number of targets for which the HEASARC lacks the corresponding abstracts: e.g., the abstracts for AO-2 Guest Observer targets which have non-US PIs are not available.

Name
The target designation.
RA
The Right Ascension of the target in the specified equinox. This was given in
J2000 equinox and with a precision of either 0.1 or 0.01 seconds of time in
the original table.
Dec
The Declination of the target in the specified equinox. This was given in
J2000 equinox and with a precision of 0.1 arcseconds in the original table.
LII
The Galactic Longitude of the target.
BII
The Galactic Latitude of the target.
Proposal_Type
The proposal type for the target in question, defined according to the
following key:
CAL : Target of routine calibration plan AO-1 : Target accepted for AO-1 with priority A, B, or C (observed only) AO-2 : Target accepted for AO-2 with priority A, B, or C (observed only) AO-3 : Target accepted for AO-3 with priority A, B, or C (observed only) AO-4 : Target accepted for AO-4 with priority A, B, or C (observed only) AO-5 : Target accepted for AO-5 with priority A, B, or C (observed only) AO-6 : Target accepted for AO-6 with priority A, B, or C (observed only) AO-7 : Target accepted for AO-7 with priority A, B, or C (observed only) AO-8 : Target accepted for AO-8 with priority A, B, or C (observed only) AO-9 : Target accepted for AO-9 with priority A, B, or C (observed only) AO-10: Target accepted for AO-10 with priority A, B, or C (observed only) AO-11: Target accepted for AO-11 with priority A, B, or C (observed only) AO-12: Target accepted for AO-12 with priority A, B, or C (observed only) AO-13: Target accepted for AO-13 with priority A, B, or C (observed only) AO-14: Target accepted for AO-14 with priority A, B, or C (observed only) AO-15: Target accepted for AO-15 with priority A, B, or C (observed only) AO-16: Target accepted for AO-16 with priority A, B, or C (observed only) AO-17: Target accepted for AO-17 with priority A, B, or C (observed only) AO-18: Target accepted for AO-17 with priority A, B, or C (observed only) AO-19: Target accepted for AO-17 with priority A, B, or C (observed only) AO-20: Target accepted for AO-17 with priority A, B, or C AO-21: Target accepted for AO-17 with priority A, B, or C AO-22: Target accepted for AO-17 with priority A, B, or C AO-23: Target accepted for AO-17 with priority A, B, or C GT : Target of guaranteed time program JP : Target granted by agreement of ESA Director of Science and National Space Agency of Japan following the loss of Astro-E
PNo
The proposal number corresponding to the target. This field is left blank for
calibration targets.
Target_ID
The unique target identifier comprised of the proposal number concatenated
with a two-digit target number corresponding to the target in the specified
proposal. This field is only present for targets from AO-2 onwards.
PI_LName
The last name of the principal investigator of the XMM-Newton program which
was awarded the target. This field is left blank for calibration targets.
PI_FName
The first name of the principal investigator of the XMM-Newton program which
was awarded the target. This field is left blank for calibration targets.
Exposure
The exposure time in seconds, except for AO-2 targets where the tabulated
time is the duration (exposure time plus overhead) in seconds. For targets
which had not been observed as of the time of the creation of the current
version of this table, this is the planned exposure or duration, while for
targets which had already been observed, it is the maximum exposure obtained
by any of XMM-Newton's 6 instruments, including the Optical Monitor (OM). For
some programs which had a number of targets accepted as triggered targets,
all but one of the possible targets for the program, i.e., sharing the same
pno value, are listed with zero exposure values, with the remaining target
being assigned the awarded exposure time for the program.
Num_Pointings
The number of approved pointings of a given target. Note that this
information is missing for AO-1.
Priority
The priority of the target: this field is populated only for as yet
unscheduled guest observer (GO) targets, notice, and is left blank for
scheduled or completed GO targets, and for CAL, PV, and GTO targets. Priority
A and B targets are of major scientific importance and will be scheduled with
highest priority (A with higher priority than B). A and B targets will be
rescheduled in a later AO if they are not observed in their original AO
period. Priority C targets are of lower priority and will not be transferred
to a later AO if they cannot be observed in their original AO: thus only some
fraction of priority C targets will actually be observed. Priority T targets
are Target of Opportunity (ToO) type observations which will only be executed
if certain trigger criteria are fulfilled. Consequently, only a small number
of priority T targets will actually be observed. The candidate list of ToO
targets will be transferred to a later AO for those targets for which the
maximal observing time was not achieved in their originating AO.
Obs_Type
This parameter is populated only for certain, unusual observation types, such
as triggered observations, otherwise it is left blank:
T/t: Triggered observation granted. In the case of a list of possible targets, only the time corresponding to the targets flagged as 'T' is granted; no additional time is granted for targets flagged as 't'. L : Large program C : Joint Chandra/XMM-Newton observation TH : Joint HST/XMM-Newton triggered observation. H : Joint HST/XMM-Newton observation. N : Joint NuSTAR/XMM-Newton observation. S : Joint Swift/XMM-Newton observation. V : Joint ESO-VLT/XMM-Newton observation

The abstract of the proposal associated with the target. Note that some

titles are missing for proposals in AO-1 through AO-4.
