XMMBSS - XMM-Newton Bright Serendipitous Survey |

This table contains the basic data on a complete sample of 400 X-ray sources (389 of them belong to the BSS, 67 to the HBSS, with 56 X-ray sources in common) derived from the analysis of 237 suitable XMM-Newton fields (211 for the HBSS). At the flux limit of the survey, it covers a survey area of 28.10 (25.17 for the HBSS) square degrees. The extragalactic number-flux relationships (in the 0.5 - 4.5 keV and in the 4.5 - 7.5 keV energy bands) are in good agreement with previous and new results making the authors confident in the correctness of the data selection and their analysis.

Name
The recommnded designation fpr sources in this table, using the 'XBS' prefix
for XMM Bright Source and the J2000 coordinates of the X-ray source.
Source_Flag
This parameter contains flags which refer to notes concerning the X-ray
source as follows:
a = A detailed X-ray and optical spectral analysis of these sources have been reported in Caccianiga et al. (2004A&A...416..901C). b = A detailed X-ray and optical spectral analysis of these sources have been reported in Severgnini et al. (2003A&A...406..483S). c = These sources are more extended than the XMM-Newton EPIC MOS2 Point Spread Function at their off-axis angle. Count rates have been evaluated using aperture photometry. d = A detailed X-ray spectral analysis of these sources have been reported in Galbiati et al. (2005A&A...430..927G). f = These 11 sources belong to the HBSS sample but not to the BSS sample, while the remaining 56 HBSS sources are present also in the BSS sample.
ObsID
The XMM-Newton observation identifier of the observation in which the X-ray
source was detected.
RA
The Right Ascension of the X-ray source in the selected equinox. This was
given in J2000 coordinates to a precision of 0.1 seconds of time in the
original table.
Dec
The Declination of the X-ray source in the selected equinox. This was given
in J2000 coordinates to a precision of 0.1 arcseconds in the original table.
LII
The Galactic Longitude of the X-ray source.
BII
The Galactic Latitude of the X-ray source.
Off_Axis
The angular distance between the X-ray source and the MOS2 image center, in
arcminutes.
SB_Count_Rate
The X-ray source count rate, in the 0.5 - 4.5 keV energy band, in ct/s, for
sources in the BSS sample (sample = 'BSS' or 'BOTH').
SB_Count_Rate_Error
The one-sigma uncertainty in the 0.5 - 4.5 keV count rate of the X-ray
source.
HB_Count_Rate
The X-ray source count rate, in the 4.5 - 7.5 keV energy band, in ct/s, for
sources in the HBSS sample (sample = 'HBSS' or 'BOTH').
HB_Count_Rate_Error
The one-sigma uncertainty in the 4.5 - 7.5 keV count rate of the X-ray
source.
HR_2
The hardness ratio, HR2, defined as
HR2 = [C(2-4.5kev)-C(0.5-2keV)]/[C(2-4.5kev)+C(0.5-2keV)]where C(0.5-2keV), C(2-4.5keV) and C(4.5-7.5keV) are the "PSF and vignetting corrected" count rates in the 0.5 - 2, 2 - 4.5 and 4.5 - 7.5 keV energy bands, respectively.
HR_2_Pos_Err
The upper uncertainty in the hardness ratio HR2. The errors in the hardness
ratios have been evaluated using simulations and correspond to 1-sigma.
HR_2_Neg_Err
The lower uncertainty in the hardness ratio HR2. The errors in the hardness
ratios have been evaluated using simulations and correspond to 1-sigma.
HR_3
The hardness ratio, HR3, defined as
HR3 = [C(4.5-7.5kev)-C(2-4.5keV)/[C(4.5-7.5kev)+C(2-4.5keV)]where C(0.5-2keV), C(2-4.5keV) and C(4.5-7.5keV) are the "PSF and vignetting corrected" count rates in the 0.5 - 2, 2 - 4.5 and 4.5 - 7.5 keV energy bands, respectively. For two sources (XBS J052155.0-252220 and XBS J213840.5-424241), HR3 is undefined since these sources are undetected above 2 keV.
HR_3_Pos_Err
The upper uncertainty in the hardness ratio HR3. The errors in the hardness
ratios have been evaluated using simulations and correspond to 1-sigma.
HR_3_Neg_Err
The lower uncertainty in the hardness ratio HR3. The errors in the hardness
ratios have been evaluated using simulations and correspond to 1-sigma.
Optical_Class
The spectroscopic classification of the optical counterpart to the X-ray
source based on the following scheme:
AGN1 = broad line AGN AGN2 = narrow line AGN GAL = Optically Normal Galaxy CL = Cluster of Galaxies BL = BL Lac Object star = star ? = Tentative classification
Class
The HEASARC Browse object classification based on the value of the
optical_class parameter.
Sample
The XMM-Newton Bright Serendipitous Survey contains two highly overlapping,
flux-limited samples in two different energy bands, namely the BSS and the
HBSS samples. The data for the X-ray sources in these two samples were
presented in Tables 3 and 4 of the published paper, respectively. The HEASARC
has merged the entries from these samples into one Browse table with 400
total entries, and introduced this parameter so that users can easily
identify the provenance of entries: X-ray sources which are contained only in
the 'BSS' sample (Table 3) have sample = 'BSS', those only in the 'HBSS'
sample (Table 4) have sample = 'HBSS', and those X-ray sources in common to
both samples have sample = 'BOTH'.
