Overview

This table contains the RXTE All-Sky Slew Survey Catalog of AGN and AGN candidates. The catalog authors compiled a sample of 95 AGNs which were serendipitously detected in the 3-20 keV band at Galactic latitude |b| > 10 degrees during the RXTE Slew Survey (XSS, Revnivtsev et al., CDS Cat. <J/A+A/418/927>), and utilized it to study the statistical properties of the local population of AGN, including the X-ray luminosity function and absorption distribution. They find that among low X-ray luminosity (LX < 1043.5 erg/s) AGN, the ratio of absorbed (characterized by intrinsic absorption in the range 1022 cm-2 < NH < 1024 cm-2) and unabsorbed (NH < 1022 cm-2) objects is 2:1, while this ratio drops to less than 1:5 for higher luminosity AGN. The summed X-ray output of AGN with LX > 1041 erg/s estimated here is smaller than the earlier estimated total X-ray volume emissivity in the local Universe, suggesting that a comparable X-ray flux may be produced together by lower luminosity AGN, non-active galaxies and clusters of galaxies. The authors also presented a sample of 35 AGN candidates, composed of unidentified XSS sources.

Most of these AGN belong to the local population (z < 0.1). For each confirmed AGN source, the following information is provided: AGN class, the count rate in two energy bands (3-8 keV and 8-20 keV), the observed and intrinsic (absorption-corrected) luminosity in the 3 - 20keV band, and the intrinsic absorption column density. For the AGN candidates, composed of unidentified XSS sources, the following information is provided: the count rate in two energy bands (3-8 keV and 8-20 keV), the estimated intrinsic absorption column density, and information about RASS Bright Source Catalog and HEAO A-1 X-ray source counterparts.

Provenance

This table was created by the HEASARC in December 2004 based on CDS Catalog J/A+A/423/469, table1.dat and table2.dat (the corrected version of 01-Dec-2004).

HEASARC Implementation

The HEASARC has combined the lists of AGN and AGN candidates given in Tables 1 and 2, respectively, of the published catalog into one table. All of the AGN candidates have been given a class of 'Unidentified' in the HEASARC table. The HEASARC has made some further additions to the tabular material: since no explicit positions were given in the original published paper, the positions for all the sources were taken from the RXTE All-Sky Slew Survey Catalog of Revnivtsev et al. (2004, A&A, 418, 927), which latter catalog is available in Browse as the XTEASSCAT table.

Parameters

Name
The recommended RXTE Slew Survey Catalog source designation, using the prefix 'XSS J' and the truncated J2000 source coordinates.

Alt_Name
A common alternative name for the XSS source.

RA
The Right Ascension of the source.

Dec
The Declination of the source.

LII
The Galactic Longitude of the source.

BII
The Galactic Latitude of the source.

AGN_Type
For the confirmed AGN from Table 1 of the published catalog, an AGN classification is given according to the key below (the AGN candidates listed in Table 2 of the published catalog have not been assigned any value for this parameter):

      Value: Meaning

        RQQ: radio-quiet quasar
        RLQ: radio-loud quasar
BL: blazar (BL Lac object or flat-spectrum radio quasar)
         S1: Seyfert 1 galaxy (types 1, 1.2 and 1.5)
       NLS1: narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxy
         S2: Seyfert 2 galaxy (types 1.8, 1.9 and 2)
         RG: radio galaxy
       BLRG: broad-line radio galaxy
       NLRG: narrow-line radio galaxy
      LLAGN: low luminosity AGN

Count_Rate_1
The count rate for the X-ray source in the 3-8 keV energy band, in units of ct/s/PCU. These count rates have been obtained by averaging over multiple slews performed at random times over the period from 1996 - 2002. It is important to note that, in contrast to the original XSS Catalog, the uncertainties quoted here do not take into account RXTE slews related to pointings at the sources. The current sample is thus effectively serendipitous.

Count_Rate_1_Error
The 1-sigma statistical error in the 3-8 keV count rate, in units of ct/s/PCU.

Count_Rate_2
The count rate for the X-ray source in the 8-20 keV energy band, in units of ct/s/PCU.

Count_Rate_2_Error
The 1-sigma statistical error in the 8-20 keV count rate, in units of ct/s/PCU.

Redshift
The redshift of the AGN. The luminosity distances were calculated from the known redshifts assuming a cosmology with the Hubble constant = 75 km s-1 Mpc-1, OmegaM = 0.3, and OmegaLambda = 0.7, except for 10 nearby sources with redshifts less than or equal to 0.01 for which the distances from the Nearby Galaxies Catalog of Tully (1988) were adopted.

Distance
The distance from the Nearby Galaxies Catalog of Tully (1988), adopted for 10 nearby sources with redshifts less than or equal to 0.01, in megaparsecs (Mpc).

Log_Lx_Obs
The observed X-ray luminosity in the observer's 3-20 keV energy band, in erg/s. This was calculated from the measured 3-20 keV count rate (the sum of the 3-8 and 8-20 keV count rates) by taking into account the spectral response of the RXTE/PCA instrument and assuming a power-law spectrum of photon index = 1.8 with a low-energy cutoff due to intrinsic absorption.

Log_Lx
The intrinsic (absorption-corrected) X-ray luminosity in the observer's 3-20 keV energy band, in erg/s. This was calculated by correcting the observed 3-20 keV luminosity for the intrinsic absorption.

Limit_NH
A limit flag parameter for the absorption column density. The quoted limits are 1-sigma if based on the XSS hardness ratio, and are more conservative in other cases.

NH
The intrinsic absorption column density, NH, in cm-2. The way that this was calculated is discussed in detail in Section 2.1 of the published version of this catalog.

NH_Error
The 1-sigma error in the absorption column density, in cm-2.

Ref_NH
A parameter containing a code for the reference for the quoted column density according to the following key:

     Value: Reference

1: XSS catalog, Revnivtsev et al., 2004, CDS Cat. <J/A+A/418/927>

Flag_Prev_Xray
A parameter which flags that there has been a previous X-ray detection of the source, where 'a' means a previous X-ray detection only below 2 keV in the ROSAT All-Sky Survey and 'b' a previous X-ray only marginal detection by HEAO-1/A2 (Della Ceca et al., 1990, CDS Cat. <VII/181>).

RASS_Ctrpart
This parameter lists the name of the likely soft X-ray counterpart from the ROSAT All-Sky Survey Bright Source Catalog (RASSBSC) for the AGN candidates from Table 2 of the published catalog.

HEAO1_A1_Ctrpart
This parameter lists any possible association with a HEAO A-1 Source for the AGN candidates from Table 2 of the published catalog.

Class
The HEASARC Browse object classification, based on the agn_type parameter. All of the AGN candidates have been assigned a Class of 'Unidentified' by the HEASARC.
