OBSERVATIONS OF NEARBY SINGLE WHITE DWARFS AS POSSIBLE CANDIDATES OF THE GALACTIC RIDGE EMISSION

ABSTRACT

Galactic Ridge Emission (GRE) is the emission from optically thin thermal plasma spread over the inner galactic disk with a scale height of 100pc. It is still a matter of debate whether it originates from truely diffusive gas filling the entire disk or from superposition of individual X-ray sources. We propose to observe nearby single white dwarfs in order to detect hard X-rays caused by accretion of the interstellar matter. According to a simple estimation, the integration of this emission over the entire inner galactic disk can explain the amount and spectral properties of GRE.
