SPECTROSCOPY OF X-RAY EMISSION FROM COMETS P/ENKCE AND C/HALE-BOPP
ABSTRACT
The discovery of bright, variable X-ray emission from Comet Hyakutake has unexpectedly opened an entire new field of research for X-ray astronomy. While several models have been proposed, none provide a satisfactory explanation for the surprisingly bright emission. In an effort to understand this new phenomenon, we propose spectral observations with ASCA of comets P/Encke and C/Hale-Bopp as part of a larger coordinated campaign.

TARGET 2
THE OBSERVATIONS ARE "TIME CRITICAL" IN THAT THEY NEED TO BE DONE AS SOON AS THE COMET RE-ENTERS THE ASCA VIEWING SWATH ON SEPTEMBER 24, 1997, IN ORDER TO MAXIMIZE THE DETECTED FLUX.
