COORDINATED ASCA OBSERVATIONS OF CORONAL STRUCTURE AND FLARES ON THE RS CVN BINARY SIGMA CRB
ABSTRACT
ASCA observations of the RS CVn binary Sigma CrB lasting two binary orbits (2.3 days elapsed time) are requested as part of a coordinated satellite and ground-based study of coronal structure, abundances, and flaring within this system. Simultaneous multiwavelength observations of flares and other coronal variability offer an extremely powerful technique to determine the physical processes controlling thermal and nonthermal coronal plasmas. We shall investigate the coronal temporal variability and model the quiescent and flaring plasma conditions. Flare elemental abundance variations will be quantified. Sigma CrB is the best target to study extreme coronal activity on solar-like dwarf stars.
