OBSERVATIONS OF THE CRAB-LIKE PLERION G 54.1+0.3

ABSTRACT

The association of neutron stars with supernova remnants (SNR) is a cornerstone of stellar astrophysics. However, radio pulsars are confirmed to be associated with only a dozen Galactic remnants. Fortunately, an indirect, but equally effective way to infer the presence of a central neutron star in a SNR is by observations of pulsar powered synchrotron nebulae (or ``plerions''). Moreover it turns out that a complete census of Galactic plerions would shed much desired light on birth parameters of neutron stars. Herein we propose to observe the Crab-like plerion G\~{}54.1+0.3. This distant source has a hard X-ray spectrum, as observed by EINSTEIN and ROSAT, due to heavy foreground absorption. ASCA's hard X-ray capabilities would help measure the plerion energy output, determine its age
