OBSERVATIONS OF SN1995N
ABSTRACT
Three days ago (Aug 2), SN1995N was detected for the first time in X-rays with the ROSAT satellite's HRI (Lewin, Zimmermann & Aschenbach, IAUC submitted Aug 5), making it only the seventh supernova to be detected in the X-ray band. As a logical consequence, we propose observations of SN1995N with ASCA's superior energy resolution and sensitivity at higher energies. Such observations may allow us to determine the neutral hydrogen absorption column density of the front and reverse shocks and thus the thickness of the radiatively cooled layer between them, providing important information on the progenitor's circumstellar environment. Coordinated observations at radio wavelengths with the VLA are underway.
