SUPERWINDS IN STARBURST GALAXIES: NGC2146 AND 7552
ABSTRACT
Supernova-driven mass outflows have been proposed to have profound effects on the formation and evolution of galaxies and on the enriching and energizing of the IGM. X-ray data provide unique insight into the superwind phenomenon because X-rays come directly from the wind material as well as shock-heated clouds and swept-up ambient ISM. We propose ASCA observations of two nearby starburst galaxies selected from the IRAS catalog, NGC 2146 and NGC 7552, for which we have strong optical evidence for outflows. The ASCA hard X-ray data will be of fundamental importance to help separate and differentiate between (i) very hot shock-heated plasma with Fe XXV emission lines and (ii) the combined emission of stellar coronal and binary sources.
