X-RAY FLUX IN GIANT MOLECULAR CLOUDS
ABSTRACT
We propose measurements of X-ray flux from giant molecular clouds (GMC), S140, M17 and Cep A, which represent GMC and are extensively studied in infrared and radio waves. Our observations of a typical GMC, NGC 6334, have revealed that (1) X-ray flux is 1x10^{33} erg/s (2) the spectrum is described with a plasma temperature above 7 keV (3) X-ray peaks correspond to far-infrared sources. Thus it is essential to observe GMCs with a hard X-ray imaging capability. X-ray flux in GMC determines ionization rate of the molecular cloud which in turn has influence on star formation rate and initial mass function (IMF) of GMC. This observation will also give us information about the total X-ray flux from molecular clouds in the Galaxy.
