SYSTEMATIC X-RAY SURVEY OF ROTATION-POWERED PULSARS
ABSTRACT
ASCA has proven to be very powerful for pulsar observations thanks to its imaging, spectroscopic, and timing capabilities in high energy band. Examples are new detections of pulsar-wind nebulae from old pulsars, and discovery of the first magnetospheric X-ray pulsation from a millisecond pulsar. We propose to expand the ASCA sample of pulsars with a systematic survey project, starting with 8 pulsars in this AO. With this project, we investigate the characteristics of the X-ray emission from the neutron star surface, the pulsar magnetosphere, and the pulsar-wind nebula, and their dependence on age, spin period, magnetic field, and pulsar environment. The goal is to understand the acceleration and emission mechanism of pulsars and their evolution.
