OBSERVATION OF SHOCK FRONT NEAR THE INTERSECTION OF NORTH POLAR SPUR AND GOULD BELT

ABSTRACT

North Polar Spur forms a bright narrow ridge in the 408MHz radio map and the ROSAT soft X-ray map at around (l=30d, b=15-30d). This happens to be the direction where Gould Belt is seen tangentially from us. A recent analysis of neutral hydrogen temperature distribution using radio 21cm surveys has revealed a hot ridge running parallel to those in radio and soft X-ray but displaced by about 10 degree. The bright ridges in radio and soft X-ray are mutually displace by about 5 degree. We may well be seeing an SNR shock front associated with Gould Belt tangentially. We propose to scan this region in the hard X-ray band for the first time and study profiles in chemical composition, ionization state and emission mechanism. We expect to find a particle acceleration site here.
