SEARCH FOR THE ORIGIN OF COSMIC RAYS

ABSTRACT

Cosmic rays were discovered in 1912 by the Austrian physicist V. Hess. Ever since, scientists have debated where cosmic rays come from and how atomic particles can be acclerated to ultra high energies. SNRs have long been thought to be the origin of cosmic rays, but the evidence has been lacking until now. With ASCA, we now found evidence for the Fermi accleration in shock-shells of SNRs. The aim of this study is to observe further evidence from other SNRs than SN1006, G375.5-0.5 etc and to provide conclusive results for the comic ray origin. In fact we found a promising candidate near the Galactic Center.
