ASCA OBSERVATION OF THE HIGHLY POLARIZED SEYFERT 1 GALAXY MRK 704

ABSTRACT

Recently it has been discovered that many Seyfert galaxies with X-ray warm absorbers have reddened and polarized optical spectra. These results support a model of dust coincident with the ionized gas. However, a handful of Seyfert 1 galaxies show high polarization and yet their optical spectra are blue, apparently indicating very little material in the line of sight. This puzzling result is difficult to explain; however, one possibility is that there is in fact material in the line of sight but that reddening indicators fail to detect it. Since X-ray spectroscopy is very sensitive to ionized absorption in the line of sight, we propose an ASCA observation of the highly polarized, optically blue, Seyfert 1 galaxy Mrk 704. These results will be used to constrain the
