A METASTABLE ASSOCIATED ABSORBER IN THE BROAD-LINE RADIO GALAXY ARP 102B
ABSTRACT
HST UV spectroscopy of the broad-line radio galaxy Arp 102B revealed a new phenomemon, absorption lines from low-ionization species including metastable levels of Fe II. A ROSAT PSPC spectrum of Arp 102B showed excess absorption by cold gas, but because the X-ray column is so large, it is not accurately measured by the PSPC. We need an ASCA spectrum to better compare the X-ray absorption properties of Arp 102B with the column densities estimated from its UV absorption lines, with the goal of inferring the locations of the absorbers. Preliminary indications are that the X-ray absorption is too large to be compatible with measures of optical extinction in the AGN. We wish to confirm this result, which if true might require a dustless cold absorber, possibly an accretion disk wind.
