ASCA OBSERVATIONS OF RED BL LACS

ABSTRACT

``Red BL Lacs'' may represent quasars that are gravitationally lensed by foreground disk galaxies, and their inverted spectral distributionmay be due to strong extinction in the galactic disks. To test these ideas we propose to observe PKS 1413+135 and MS 0205.7+3509, which are among the brightest red BL Lacs or quasars in radio, IR, and X-ray and among the best studied. The observations will allow measurement of the intrinsic emission spectra, which can be used to determine whether these two objects are intrinsically different from more ordinary BL Lacs and whether they are within or behind their known ``host galaxies''. Accurate measurement of the X-ray absorptions will be invaluable for constraining the physical properties of the absorbing gas in the galaxies.
