Subject: CLUSTERS OF GALAXIES AND SUPERCLUSTERS

A SUNYAEV-ZEL'DOVICH STUDY OF LOW REDSHIFT CLUSTERS OF GALAXIES

ABSTRACT

We propose ASCA observations of A3827 & A3532 to complete a ROSAT+ASCA study of a flux-limited sample of 15 clusters. This sample will form the foundation of an extensive Sunyaev-Zel'dovich survey of low redshift clusters using the new 2m Viper telescope. Viper is ideal for these observations, since it is stationed at the South Pole (the driest site in the world), has a wide frequency range (45-350 GHz) and a beam throw of 2 degrees. Low redshift SZ studies have several advantages over higher redshift work e.g. more detailed cluster X-ray maps and easier optical and radio follow-up. Using Viper SZ maps of unprecedented accuracy and detail, together with high quality X-ray data, we will be able to measure the Hubble Constant in the nearby universe.
