THE INTERMEDIATE POLARS V1062 TAU AND V709 CAS
ABSTRACT
Of the 17 intermediate polars bright enough for phase-resolved spectroscopy with ASCA, 15 have been observed, and we request time for the remaining two in this proposal. We are part-way through a systematic and detailed analysis of the spin pulses in these stars, aimed at understanding the class as a whole. V1062 Tau has exceptionally long spin and orbital periods, allowing as to study accretion at one extreme of the class. V709 Cas is the opposite, with the shortest spin period accessible to ASCA. Studying the two extremes will allow us to test the theory that intermediate polars cycle between the extremes as they cycle from diskless to disk-fed states.
