Subject: SUPERNOVA REMNANTS AND GALACTIC DIFFUSE EMISSION

A SEARCH FOR EVIDENCE OF NON-THERMAL EMISSION FROM THE SUPERNOVA REMNANTS CTB 37A/B

ABSTRACT

We propose to measure the spatial and spectral properties of the CTB 37A and CTB 37B supernova remnants. Because one or both of the remnants is reported to emit gamma rays at energies > 100 MeV, a measurement of the X-ray spectra of the remnants, independent of whether the X-ray emission is thermal or non- thermal, will be important to obtain a clear understanding of the non-thermal particle spectra of the remnants. Since at least one of the remnants is interacting with a molecular cloud, a comparison of the X-ray and radio data will help determine how the interaction of a molecular cloud and a remnant effect the development of the remnant. In addition, we will search for evidence of a (probably) transient source that has been observed near CTB 37A in some RXTE scan data.
