ASCA OBSERVATIONS OF POLARIZED SEYFERT 1 GALAXIES
ABSTRACT
Our recent ASCA observation of Mrk 704, a highly polarized optically blue Seyfert 1 galaxy, shows evidence for partial covering by heavy absorption. This result is difficult to explain in terms of simple models. Dust-free gas must be present in the line of sight to the nucleus, but a significant amount of dust out of the line of sight is required also to produce the high polarization rising toward the blue. We propose ASCA observations of three polarized X-ray weak Seyfert 1 galaxies which show little evidence for optical reddening. The anticipated heavily absorbed X-ray spectrum and large covering fraction will underline the disagreement between X-ray and optical absorption indicators and place the most stringent constraints on models to explain the
