UNDERSTANDING TON S180?
ABSTRACT
Only 4 AGN have been observed by ASCA for > 200ks. The two long datasets published to date, MCG-6-30-15 and IRAS 18325-5926, have revealed rapid variations in emission and absorption features and periodicity in X-ray flux (respectively). The huge scientific return from those studies suggests that at this stage of the ASCA mission, very long observations are the most exciting and productive use of ASCA. We propose the first long and quasi-continuous observation of a bright and variable NLSy1 galaxy to be conducted by ASCA. We request a 480 ks exposure on TON S180, to search for periodicity and to study the spectral variations with flux known to occur in this source.
