THE FUNDAMENTAL NATURE OF THE ENERGY SOURCE IN SEYFERT GALAXIES
ABSTRACT
The most important unanswered question concerning the Seyfert galaxy phenomenon is the fundamental nature of the energy source. Is this entirely an AGN "monster" or is there a significant contribution from massive hot stars? We propose observations of Mkn 266, NGC 7674, ESO 362-G8, Mkn 1073, and Mkn 78, all Seyfert 2 galaxies with a circumnuclear starburst, to complete a small sample of such objects with ASCA data and thus increase our ability to distinguish between these energy sources. Combined with X-ray data of similar objects, this will provide a tool for testing the importance of starbursts in the Seyfert phenomenon, allow us to 'flag' Seyfert 2s with a strong starburst contribution, and determine whether Seyfert 2s with starbursts contain deeply buried Seyfert 1 nuclei.
