OBSERVATIONS OF TWO SOFT GAMMA REPEATERS, SGR 1627-41 AND SGR 1806-20
ABSTRACT
Soft gamma repeaters are rare sources of transient gamma ray emission and persistent X-ray emission; three of the four known are also X-ray pulsars. Recently, it has been found that both the X-ray flux and spin-down rate of SGR 1900+14 are not constant and the spectrum contains a thermal component. We propose to investigate these possibilities for SGR 1806-20, discover/confirm pulsations in SGR 1627-41, and confirm the fading of SGR 1627-41, and search for a thermal component in the SGR 1627-41 spectrum. Furthermore, we propose to search for proton cyclotron line features in the spectrum of both sources which would provide a confirmation of the magnetar model.
