A DEEP ASCA OBSERVATION OF THREE INTRIGUING SOURCES IN NGC 1313
ABSTRACT
We propose a deep (5-10 day) ASCA pointing at the nearby spiral galaxy NGC 1313. This galaxy contains 3 well separated, high X-ray luminosity sources, two massive black hole binaries and SN1978K. The proposed observation will allow us to obtain definitive spectra for each source, which we can then compare with spectra from the shorter PV and AO2 observations. We can search for flux and spectral variability within the observation. We will search for a period in SN1978K, which might house a new neutron star. The observation shed light on two intriguing classes of source, X-ray luminous SNe and very massive black hole binaries.
