NICER Significant Events

This table list events that may have affected the orientation, data acquitision, or data quality for NICER. It is an important resource for diagnosing unexplained artifacts in the NICER data sets.

Note: ROBO operations (ROBO Ops) can cause obstruction of the NICER XTI field of view for one or more days around the specified activity. Observations within a day (or two) of a scheduled ROBO activity should be checked for possible obstruction of a portion of the XTI field of view. See the analysis thread on ISS obstruction of the XTI field of view for more information.

2023-02-18 2023-049 02:19:00 Disabled OHMAN TOO response (MAXI was giving overnight multiple triggers in a row which we think were false)\n\nUploaded an ATS in the A buffer that we will switch to from the load running in the B buffer 5 minutes prior to the 82P undock. ATS A will point the head away from the undock in case of contamination AZ=90deg, EL=88 deg. It will then switch back to the science ATS 3 hours later.\n\nWhen the load commanded the head to EL 88 deg it hit the softstop and tripped the EL fault. This had to be cleared before we could go back to science pointing.\n\nSCIENCE INTERRUPTED FROM 2023-049-02:19:00 UNTIL 23-049-03:47:54

2023-01-04 2023-004 17:44:00 After ATS commanded NICER to a target change at 2023-004-17:44:00, the AZ motor failed to move the head again and NICER did not track the target. Operator noticed NICER was not tracking and enabled the sun angle violation APs that were still disabled from the morning safe, so that NICER would safe again, since cause of not being able to track was unknown at the time. Operator tried to move head in AZ direction again without success.\n\nEngineers (Alice and Gary) were called in and team was able to “unstick” the AZ by commanding multiple slower movements of the head in the AZ direction.\n\nScience was resumed at 23-004-22:25:48.
2023-01-04 2023-004 10:53:27 NICER entered safe mode at FSW AP #66 (AZ Sun angle violation) tripped at 23-004-10:53:27.062.  This due to sticky AZ motor not being able to move the head to the commanded target.\nOperator recovered to science collection at 23-004-12:18:40.
2023-01-03 2023-003 03:32:00 NICER entered safe mode due to Action Point 48 FDC.  Too few GPS signals.  Alerting system was down, so operators didn’t see until around 13:00 at which time recovery commenced. Total Science downtime was from 23-003-03:32 until 23-003-13:37:38
2023-01-03 2024-003 21:12:17 Loaded RTS 150_v00 and 151_v00 and v01 to enable detectors for ID 5406 in the following config:\n1-1, 2-8, 4-1, 5-1, 6-1, 7-7. Spent some time from 20:53 to 21:07 trying different detector configurations for this targetid in real-time.

2020-01-14 2020-014 14:45:00 NICER in Safemode after manual reset of the star tracker. The ST attitude was invalid due to an incorrect AGS7 load earlier at 14:31 which didn't account for ISS structure obstruction so some observations (namely PSR_J0437-4715_opt1) were obstructed until the load was replaced at 21:40. NICER left safe mode at 15:30.
