The Devil Made Me Do It
Has it been six years already? Hard as it is to believe, July 23 2006 marked the sixth anniversary of the launch of the Chandra X-ray Observatory. Chandra has seen the unseen, like identifying the collapsed remnant at the heart of the Cas A supernova remnant, measuring the spinning nebula around the Crab Pulsar, finding X-ray jets from active galaxies, and other amazing things. Here we reprise probably the "scariest" of Chandra's observations, an observation of X-ray emission from the Perseus cluster of galaxies. The apparently demonic visage which seems to peer out of the image is produced by the "drumming" of a supermassive black hole which produced a "sound wave" through the cluster. Happy Halloween!
