A Long Hard Glance
The plane of the Milky Way Galaxy is regularly observed by the INTEGRAL gamma-ray observatory. The image above shows the first year of the Galactic Plane scan using the IBIS instrument, a coded mask imager which can observe in an exceptionally wide energy range (15 keV - 10 MeV). The galactic plane image shown above is in the 30-50 keV energy range and is the result of about 5 million seconds of observing time. About 120 point sources can be seen. The insets show particularly interesting regions of the Galactic Plane.
