The 0.1 - 0.4 keV band contour plot of the X-ray intensities of the spiral galaxy NGC 253 overlayed on the optical image. One of the remarkable features of this galaxy, seen edge-on, is its high star-forming rate in the region of the nucleus. In the soft X-ray region we can see two million degree gas above the galaxy disc in the halo. The halo of gas on the side of NGC 253 that is turned away from us is partly absorbed (obscured) by the galaxy disc in between. The hot gas was carried into the halo by stellar and supernova explosions.
