ROSAT was launched into low Earth orbit from Cape Canaveral on 1 June, 1990. It was turned off on 12 February, 1999.

Spacecraft operations were controlled from the German Space Operations Center (GSOC) ground station in Oberpfaffenhofen, Germany. Contact with the ground station occured for 8 minutes on five or six contiguous orbits out of 15 orbits per day. Thus there were groups of contacts over an 8 hour period followed by a 16 hour period of no contact.
