IC 443
Image credit: Max-Planck-Institut für extraterrestrische Physik (MPE)
This image of SNR IC 443, roughly 1000 years old, shows a strong variation in X-ray intensity over the remnant. This is due to absorption by a molecular cloud which partly obscures this source.
The molecular cloud is between the Earth and the supernova remnant, and is absorbing some of the X-ray photons that would normally reach us.
