PSPC: AR Lac

AR Lac

Image credit: Max-Planck-Institut für extraterrestrische Physik (MPE)

This is a PSPC image of the region containing the active binary star system AR Lac (the bright source near the center of the field). The ROSAT observations of AR Lac covered more than two orbits of the two stars, or about 4 days. During this time, a very strong flare was observed from AR Lac: the peak X-ray luminosity of this flare was 100,000 times the typical X-ray luminosity of the Sun.
