on behalf of the Italian Space Agency (ASI) and the Netherlands Agency
for Aerospace Programs (NIVR), I have the pleasure of inviting you to
take part in the BeppoSAX Astronomy Observation Program.

The attached ANNOUNCEMENT OF OPPORTUNITY (AO5) concerns the fifth
round of proposals for the GUEST OBSERVER PROGRAM

                   Proposals due by May 21, 2001.

Dear Colleague,


This letter is to inform you about the opportunity to submit proposals to the:


                     BeppoSAX GUEST OBSERVER PROGRAM (GOP)


for the period of operations covering June 2001 - end of April, 2002.


Following the  decision by ASI  ( on April 10 , 2001 ) to extend the
operation of BeppoSAX up to April 30, 2002, the operational phase of
BeppoSAX covering the observation of the Target list approved in the AO-4,
originally to be closed on April 30, 2001, will be extended to June 15,
2001 to include additional pointings still queuing; an AO-5 program
will start in June 2001.


In AO5, 100% of the AO time will be allocated to Guest Observers Program
open for competition to proposals led by PI's from any country worldwide.

Proposals to participate in the BeppoSAX observing programs should be
prepared and submitted following the instructions given in the documents
"BeppoSAX Announcement of Opportunity AO-5 for Guest Observer Program" and
"BeppoSAX Observers` Handbook" with its "Addendum".

Deadlines for proposal submission are:

              BeppoSAX   GOP AO-5  ====>> May 21 2001


Each proposal will be evaluated by the BeppoSAX Time Allocation Committee.

The list of approved targets will be available before the end of June 2001

Successful proponents are expected to receive the necessary financial
support from their home Institutions or National Agency.
