Suzaku Guest Observer Facility

The Cap Region of M82

M82 Cap

Credit: Tsuru et al. / ISAS/JAXA / Suzaku GOF

The "Cap" is located about 12 kpc above the disk of the starburst galaxy, M82. Tsuru et al. (2007) obtained a high quality Suzaku XIS spectrum of this region, including the first clear detection of the Oxygen line. The metal abundances of the Cap they have derived are consistent with the Type II supernova origin. They have also detected additional diffuse X-rays connecting the Cap to the disk of M82.
