INTERNATIONAL ASTRONOMY MEETING
The Multicoloured Landscape of Compact Objects
and their Explosive Origins:
Theory vs. Observations
June 11 - 24, 2006
Cefalu', Sicily (Italy)

+-------------------------------------------------+
Introduction
------------
In the wake of the success of our International Astrophysics
Conference `INTERACTING BINARIES: Accretion, Evolution and
Outcomes' held in Cefalu', Sicily in July 2004, we have decided
to organize a new conference, extending the duration of the
meeting and broadening the range of scientific topics covered.
Once again, the workshop is being jointly organized by INAF
(Astronomical Observatories of Rome and Teramo) and by the Physics
Department of the University of Palermo, under the auspices of
the Cefalu' Local Authorities and the Fondazione Mandralisca.
The Local Authorities have decided to assume an important role
in this event by funding a 5000 Euro prize for the best research
work of a young Astronomer. The prize-giving ceremony will take
place during the meeting.
Scientific Topics
-----------------
The main goal of this multidisciplinary workshop is to present
and discuss (via invited and contributed talks and posters) the
main scientific results of current research work in the field of
compact objects and their progenitors.
The most violent phenomena in the universe are related to the
extreme physical conditions which occur during the formation and
lifetime of collapsed objects.
The workshop will therefore deal with subjects going from
Gamma Ray Burst, to Supernovae, to Binary Systems harbouring a compact
object, and to Active Galactic Nuclei, allowing for fruitful close
interactions and useful discussions between scientists studying the
most extreme physical phenomena in the Universe.
In particular, during the meeting we will focus on the following
scientific areas:
* GAMMA RAY BURSTS (June 12-13)
- Prompt Emission and Early Afterglows
- Late Afterglows
- Global Properties of GRBs
- Short GRBs
- GRBs and Cosmology: Early Star and Galaxy Formation
- GRBs Connection to Supernova
- Present and Future Experiments
* MAGNETAR CANDIDATES: Soft Gamma-ray Repeaters and Anomalous
X-ray Pulsars (June 13-14)
- The SGRs/AXPs - Gamma-Ray Burst Connection
- The Massive Star Progenitors of SGRs and AXPs
* SUPERNOVAE (June 14-17)
- Thermonuclear Supernovae
- Core Collapse Supernovae
- Present and Future in World-Wide Coordination of SNe
Observations (instrumentation, achievable results,
science etc.)
* INTERACTING BINARIES (June 19-21)
- Accretion onto Neutron Stars
- Radio and X-ray Millisecond Pulsars
- Accretion onto Black Holes, Microquasars,
and Ultra-Luminous X-ray Sources
- Correlated Temporal and Spectral Variability
- Secular Evolution of X-ray Binaries
- X-ray Binaries in Globular Clusters and Other Galaxies
- Compact Binaries as Sources of Gravitational Radiation
* ACTIVE GALACTIC NUCLEI (June 22-23)
- The Inner Engine: Physics of Accretion and Ejection
- Birth and Growth of Super Massive Black Holes
- Host Galaxy-AGN Connection
General Information
-------------------
The Conference will be held in Cefalu', a beautiful historical touristic
town located on the northern cost of Sicily, about 70 km east of Palermo.
The Meeting will last two weeks, with the following schedule: Gamma-ray
Bursts (June 12-13), Magnetars (June 13-14), Supernovae (June 14-17),
Interacting Binaries (June 19-21), and Active Galactic Nuclei (June
22-23). It is possible to participate to one or two weeks with the
following registration fees:
- One week (early registration): Euro 320
- Two weeks (early registration): Euro 400
- One week (late registration): Euro 370
- Two weeks (late registration): Euro 450
The details for the payment will be given in the next few days, in a
second circular or in the webpage.
Since this is a self-funded workshop, we are afraid there are no funds
available for either grants or contributions for traveling/hotel
expenses.
The Meeting will take place in the Sala delle Capriate of the Historical
Cefalu' Municipal Palace in the very center of Cefalu', facing the
Arab-Norman Cathedral (Duomo). Part of the conference will also be hosted
in the close-by Sala S. Caterina (poster session and coffee breaks).
Computers and web facilities will be available in the rooms of the
Historical Building of the Fondazione Mandralisca. The two buildings are
5 min walk from each other.
For more general information on Cefalu', please consult the links
of our WWW page:
http://www.mporzio.astro.it/cefalu2006/
IMPORTANT AND URGENT - Pre-registration Policy
----------------------------------------------
Since Cefalu' is a small touristic town, and the Historical Halls hosting
the conference have a limited capacity, the total number of participants
cannot exceed about 100 people per week. Therefore, to help us in
organizing the logistics, we kindly invite you, if you are interested,
to fill our pre-registration form at the web page of the workshop:
http://www.mporzio.astro.it/cefalu2006
In the form, please indicate your intention to attend the conference for
one week (and which one) or the whole two-weeks period.
In any case, we will close the registrations as soon as the maximum number
of persons per week is reached.
The preliminary list of invited speakers and a preliminary programme
will be available on the web in the next few weeks.
