HEASARC News: GALEX - Cycle 6 Info/Reviewer Request
GALEX Newsletter, June 2009
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
1) The Call for Proposals for the GALEX Cycle 6 Guest Investigator
program was released as part of ROSES 2009 in February 2009. The
Cycle 6 program description and proposal instructions may be found on
the GALEX GI website, http://galexgi.gsfc.nasa.gov . The GALEX Cycle
6 proposal deadline is 19 June, 2009, 16:30 EDT.
During Cycle 6 (calendar year 2010), an estimated 1500 ksec (1/3 of
available observing time) is expected to be available to the
astronomical community for new observations. We anticipate that at
least 25% of the GI observing time will be allocated to Legacy
programs. Proposals will also be accepted for archival research using
the rich GALEX public data set. <http://galex.stsci.edu/GR4/> Funding
is anticipated to be ~$2M for US proposers.
GALEX proposal submission has only small changes from previous cycles.
Observations and cover pages continue to be submitted through RPS/ARK,
and scientific justifications are uploaded as .pdf files. Changes
include the use of AIS (All-Sky Imaging Survey) and CAI (CAlibration
Images) observations as grism predecessor images, and the ability to
request tiling of a large sky area without needing to enter each
pointing as a separate observation form.
GALEX is a NASA Small Explorer (SMEX) observatory, which has been in
orbit since April 2003. The PI is Chris Martin at Caltech, and the
Science Operations Center is at Caltech. GALEX conducts wide-field
imaging (2 broad bands) and spectroscopy observations in the
Ultraviolet (1350-2800 Angstroms). More information may be found at:

2) Peer reviewers wanted:
On behalf of NASA Headquarters, we are attempting to identify potential
reviewers for the GALEX Cycle 6 Proposal review. A review by competent
peers benefits the entire science community by ensuring that the
observations carried out and the resulting science return for GALEX are
of the highest quality. If you'd like to contribute to the common good
by serving as a Peer Reviewer this fall, please let us know.
The review will be mid September, near Baltimore MD (venue to be
confirmed). In previous reviews, each reviewer has been assigned ~25
proposals, with each reviewer being primary or secondary reviewer on a
subset of the proposals.
Please reply to: galex_peer_review@bigbang.gsfc.nasa.gov
as soon as possible (but no later than the end of June), giving:
a) your full name and title,
b) your institutional affiliation
c) your scientific strengths and interests (brief).
Because of possible institutional and/or scientific conflicts, our
choice of reviewers will be constrained and not all volunteers will
necessarily be selected. All reviewers must have a Ph.D. in
astrophysics or a related field by the review date. We will contact you
individually, shortly after the proposal deadline, when we will know how
many reviewers with what expertise we actually need.
If you have any questions about the peer review, please contact Dr.
Susan Neff, GALEX Mission Scientist, 301 286 5137, susan.g.neff@nasa.gov.
Thanks very much for your help, and apologies if you receive this
request more than once.
