RXTE ASM Weather Map Regions

Note: This was written before RXTE was decomissioned. We still provide data sets to use for these lessons, even though we no longer have live data.

This is a map of the sky showing all the sources detected recently by the All-Sky Monitor (ASM). This particular projection is called an Aitoff Projection, and it shows the entire sky in galactic coordinates (l,b). The diameter of the X-ray source indicates its flux, and the color indicates the change in flux from last week's value. Red objects are growing fainter, and blue objects are getting brighter.

Click on any quadrant to get information about the sources present in that quadrant of the map. Please note that some recently discovered sources may not yet be identified in the quadrant diagrams.

When you click on the Galactic Center, you will zoom into a Cartesian map of that area. This will help to distinguish the many sources located in this region of the sky.
