Ian George received his BSc in Physics with Astrophysics in 1984 from the University of Birmingham (UK), and a PhD in Astronomy in 1988 from the University of Leicester (UK). After obtaining his PhD, he worked as a Post-Doctoral Research Associate at the Institute of Astronomy, University of Cambridge (UK). Ian joined the HEASARC in 1991 in the capacity of Archive Scientist, then in 2000 joined the Joint Center for Astrophysics, (a collaboration between the former LHEA at NASA/GSFC and UMBC) as an Associate Research Professor. In 2004 Ian was promoted to Associate Professor in the Physics Department at UMBC. Ian worked at GSFC and UMBC.

Ian's research interests are primarily in Active Galactic Nuclei, and specifically the observational evidence for, and theoretical implications of "Compton Reflection", relativistic Fe Kalpha lines and photoionized gas in Seyfert Galaxies.

Ian passed away on July 19, 2020.
