WORKSHOP on HIGH THROUGHPUT X-RAY SPECTROSCOPY
September 30 - October 1 1996
FINAL ANNOUNCEMENT
------------------------------------------------------------------
The Scientific Working Group for the High Throughput X-ray
Spectroscopy Mission concept study (co-chaired by Nick White and
Harvey Tananbaum) is organizing a two-day Workshop on High Throughput
X-ray Spectroscopy to be held in Boston/Cambridge, Massachusetts, on
September 30 and October 1, 1996.
The Workshop will emphasize invited talks on the important scientific
questions to be addressed by High Throughput X-ray Spectroscopy. A
list of preliminary titles and confirmed speakers appears below. In
addition, there will be poster/display sessions for contributed papers
on related science and instrumentation topics; a subset of the poster
papers will be selected for contributed oral presentations.
Proceedings of the Workshop will be widely disseminated following the
meeting. There will be no registration fee. Since the mailing list
we are using is no doubt incomplete, please feel free to share this
announcement with potentially interested colleagues.
The baseline High Throughput X-ray Spectroscopy (HTXS) mission concept
provides ~15,000 cm^2 effective area at 1 keV, 6,000 cm^2 at 6.4 keV,
and 1500 cm^2 at 40 keV. A resolving power (E/DE) of at least 300 is
maintained across the 0.25-10 keV band, with a targetted resolution of
3000 at 6.4 keV. The angular resolution baseline is 15-30" (HPD) up
to 10 keV and 1-2' from 10 - 40 keV. For current information on the
HTXS mission concept study, please access our web page at:
http://htxs.gsfc.nasa.gov/
The Workshop will be held at the DoubleTree Guest Suites Hotel
overlooking the Charles River (on the Boston side) about one mile from
Harvard Square. We have reserved a block of rooms for up to 3 nights
(from Sunday, September 29 through Tuesday, October 1) for those
needing accommodations for the meeting. A special, reduced group rate
of $149.00 per night for a single, and $159.00 per night for a double
has been arranged with the DoubleTree Hotel. Rates are subject to the
current 5.0% state tax plus 4.7% city tax.
We plan to hold a reception (hors d'oeuvres provided plus cash bar) at
the DoubleTree on Sunday evening from 6-9 PM. We will provide
coffee/juice/pastry in the mornings, and beverage/cookies in the
afternoon (at no cost to participants). Lunch will be available each
day at the meeting site for a cost of ~$8.50.
PARTICIPANTS SHOULD MAKE THEIR OWN RESERVATIONS DIRECTLY WITH THE
HOTEL. THE REDUCED RATE CAN ONLY BE GUARANTEED AVAILABLE THROUGH
SEPTEMBER 3 (although a limited number of rooms may still be available
at this rate through September 9). To obtain the special meeting rate
mention that you are attending the Workshop organized by the
Smithsonian.
The DoubleTree Guest Suites hotel, is located at 400 Soldiers Field
Road, Boston, Massachusetts 02134. Phone (617) 783-0090, Fax (617)
783-0189. The hotel is 5 miles from Logan International Airport. Just
off the Massachusetts Turnpike, the DoubleTree is close to Boston's
museums, historical sites, and universities. Some special points of
interest located nearby are: Harvard Square, House of Blues, J.F.K.
Library, Legal Seafood, Museum of Fine Arts, Museum of Science, New
England Aquarium, and Quincy Market/Faneuil Hall.
Among many fine features, each guest suite includes: livingroom,
bedroom and bath; refrigerator; complimentary use of health club and
indoor pool facilities; and courtesy hotel van to locations throughout
Cambridge and Downtown Boston.
Parking is available at the hotel parking garage, although a car is
really unnecessary for participants staying at the Doubletree.
Meeting participants will be charged a special, reduced $5.00 parking
fee for the day, or each time the garage is entered.
