Previous: 9.1 Product Overview
Data which were processed by SASS versions earlier than version 6.0
(which was available after 1993 TBD at MPE and after 1993 TBD
in the U.S.) constitute the REV0 archive.
Because of problems with the initial release of SASS (such as the
timing problem and often large aspect uncertainties) it was decided
by international agreement that the REV0 data products would
constitute only an intermediate data archive, and further that
some derived products like source lists and background maps
produced by the REV0 processing system were too unreliable
to constitute an archived data product.
As a result only a subset of the REV0 data products distributed to
the principal investigator were released to the RDA.
Thus, for each observation, the REV0 data products in the RDA include
only the following data products listed in
Tab. 9.1.
Instrument | Archived data product
PSPC | lists of accepted photon events
| lists of rejected photon events | |
| lists of standard accepted times (i.e., , ``good times'') | |

| detector response matrix | |
| on- and off-axis effective-area file | |
| point spread function file | |

Table 9.1: REV0 data products in the RDA
The number of data files archived with each data set depends on
the instrument in use.
In addition the number and format of the data files depends on
where the data were processed.
REV0 data processed and released by MPE use a FITS format designed
to be used in the EXSAS analysis environment, while data processed
and released by GSFC use a FITS format which was designed to be used
with the PROS analysis package.
Thus, while the data products conform to the FITS standard,
there are many differences between the ``EXSAS'' and ``PROS'' versions.
These differences include the grouping of information in files,
differences in labelling of information, and the formats
(binary or ascii) of the files themselves.
While these differences are for the most part cosmetic, they can
prove vexing to the casual archive user who wants to simultaneously
analyze a German and a U.S. observation of the same field.
Software ``translators'' are available in EXSAS and PROS to enable
correct interpretation of REV0 data in either the EXSAS or
PROS formats.
Tables
9.2, 9.3, 9.4, and 9.5
list the data products for typical U.S. and Ger./U.K. data sets
archived in the RDA for a PSPC and an HRI observation,
and the name of the corresponding file in the USRDA.
